UNESCO honoured him in 1992 for more than 750 matches without a single red card, most of them in seventeen years at Raja Casablanca, where he was simply Maestro. He played every game of Morocco's 1976 Africa Cup of Nations win, the country's only continental title until 2025, and every minute of the 1986 World Cup, when Morocco finished above England and Portugal and became the first African side in the last 16; three Throne Cups came at Raja. France first capped him in Naples on 4 December 1938 and picked him again in October 1954, at 37, and Pelé later said that if he was the king of football, Benbarek was its god. He won La Liga with Atlético in 1950 and 1951, scoring 58 goals in 114 matches there, won 17 caps for France, and received the FIFA Order of Merit in 1998, six years after his death.
