Three matches in Mexico in June 1986 and one goal past him: goalless against Poland and England, then 3-1 over Portugal, and Morocco walked out of Group F as the first African side to top a World Cup group. He was African Footballer of the Year in 1986, won two Moroccan league titles and three Throne Cups with Wydad Casablanca, took Spain's Zamora Trophy with Mallorca in 1988-89, and was voted Moroccan Footballer of the Year four times. Career record: 118 caps and 0 goals for Morocco; club career at AS Salé, Wydad Athletic Club, RCD Mallorca; honours include Hall of Fame 2004.

France Football's 1985 ballot gave him 113 points to Rabah Madjer's 45, and he is still the last African Footballer of the Year to have won it while playing his club football in Africa. That same year he lifted the African Cup of Champions Clubs with FAR Rabat and was voted its best player, then ran Morocco's midfield at the 1986 World Cup, where they became the first African side to reach the second round. Career record: 46 caps and 9 goals for Morocco; club career at Union de Touarga, Real Murcia, K.S.C. Lokeren Oost-Vlaanderen.
