France Football's 1985 ballot gave him 113 points to Rabah Madjer's 45, and he is still the last African Footballer of the Year to have won it while playing his club football in Africa. That same year he lifted the African Cup of Champions Clubs with FAR Rabat and was voted its best player, then ran Morocco's midfield at the 1986 World Cup, where they became the first African side to reach the second round. Montpellier, 10 June 1998: he ran onto a long ball, shrugged off his marker and finished in the 37th minute, the goal that opened a 2-2 draw with Norway at France 98. African Footballer of the Year followed that December, the first time a Moroccan had won the CAF award; he played two World Cups, took the Portuguese Super Cup with Sporting in 1995 and the Intertoto Cup with Aston Villa in 2001.
