Two of the five goals were his when Peñarol beat Benfica 5-0 in Montevideo in the 1961 Intercontinental Cup, and he became the first Peruvian crowned a world club champion, twice over by 1966. The Copa Libertadores came in 1961 and 1966, along with six Uruguayan championships between 1961 and 1968 and 471 appearances for Peñarol, and he was capped by both Peru and Uruguay, one of very few men to manage that.
