With seconds left at Elland Road on 22 December 2001 he slid in the winner that finished a 4-3 comeback at Leeds, Newcastle having trailed 3-1 and going top of the league that night. He won three straight Peruvian titles with Sporting Cristal from 1994 and reached the 1997 Copa Libertadores final, then became the first Peruvian in the Premier League, an FA Cup finalist in 1999 and an Intertoto Cup winner in 2006, with 95 caps for Peru.
