In Bloemfontein on 20 June 2010 he scored in the 2-0 win over Slovakia that set Paraguay up to top a group containing the holders, Italy, and a year later he converted his penalty in both Copa América shootouts, against Brazil and Venezuela. Riveros won 101 caps for Paraguay and scored 16 goals, reached the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals and the 2011 Copa América final, and took league titles with Libertad in 2006 and 2007.
