Olimpia went to the Pacaembu a goal down in the 2002 Libertadores final and won it on 31 July, 2-1 on the night and 4-2 on penalties, with Cáceres at 22 in the middle of the defence. He added the 2003 Recopa Sudamericana, a second Recopa and the Apertura with Boca Juniors in 2008, Paraguayan titles in 1999 and 2000, and 61 caps across three World Cups, reaching the quarter-finals in 2010 with two goals conceded in five matches.
