On 12 November 1977 at the National Stadium in Lagos, a cross from the right glanced off Odiye's head and past his own goalkeeper, the only goal of the night against Tunisia, and Nigeria's first World Cup went with it. He was in the squad that won the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations at home, made 39 appearances for Nigeria, and later took two US Open Cups with Greek American AC in 1985 and 1994.
