Nigeria and Egypt could not be separated in the 1984 Nations Cup semi-final in Ivory Coast, and when the shootout stretched to 8-7 Sofoluwe was among the men who kept scoring. The commentator Ernest Okonkwo called him the Dean of Defence, and he reached two Nations Cup finals, losing to Cameroon in 1984 and 1988, won the Nigerian FA Cup with Abiola Babes in 1985 and 1987, and finished with more than 40 caps before moving to Belgium.
