At León on 1 June 1986 Samuel was part of the defence that kept France out until Jean-Pierre Papin scored in the 79th minute, and he played all three of Canada's matches at their first World Cup. He won the 1985 CONCACAF Championship that took Canada there and the 1990 North American Nations Cup, collected 82 caps between 1983 and 1997, and entered the Canada Soccer Hall of Fame in 2006.
