Four minutes into the second half in Berlin on 30 June 2006, El Ratón rose to a Riquelme corner and headed Argentina in front of Germany, then saw Jens Lehmann save his penalty in the shootout. He retired with 115 caps, an Argentine record at the time, Olympic gold at Athens 2004 as captain, two La Liga titles and the 2004 UEFA Cup with Valencia, and a Serie A title with Milan in 1999.
