In the Montevideo play-off of 4 November 1967, with six men sent off, he anchored the Racing back line while Juan Carlos Cárdenas's 55th-minute goal beat Celtic and made them champions of the world. El Mariscal won the 1967 Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup with Racing and the 1966 Argentine title, three Mineiro championships at Cruzeiro, three more league titles back at River Plate in 1975 and 1977, and played at the World Cups of 1966 and 1974.
