Five minutes into the 2004 final in Tunis, Santos put Tunisia ahead of Morocco, and 60,000 people in the 7 November Stadium spent the rest of the night waiting for the title to arrive. He left 2004 as African champion and joint top scorer with four goals, scored 22 in 41 games for his adopted country, won a Ligue 2 title and the 2004 Coupe de la Ligue at Sochaux, and took a Swiss championship on loan at Zürich. The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final turned on Baya's goal after twenty minutes, and Tunisia beat Zambia 4-2 to reach the final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament that year, took a runners-up medal from the final against South Africa, won the African Cup Winners' Cup with Étoile du Sahel, was twice Tunisian Footballer of the Year, and scored six goals in eight qualifiers to send Tunisia to the 2002 World Cup.
