The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final turned on Baya's goal after twenty minutes, and Tunisia beat Zambia 4-2 to reach the final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament that year, took a runners-up medal from the final against South Africa, won the African Cup Winners' Cup with Étoile du Sahel, was twice Tunisian Footballer of the Year, and scored six goals in eight qualifiers to send Tunisia to the 2002 World Cup.
