Tunisia went a goal down to Mexico in Rosario on 2 June 1978, then scored three after the break with Dhiab in the number 10 shirt directing them, the first World Cup win any African nation had managed. African Footballer of the Year in 1977, the only Tunisian ever to win it, voted his country's greatest player of the twentieth century in 2000, six league titles and four cups with Espérance, and sixteen years in the national side.

The 1996 Africa Cup of Nations semi-final turned on Baya's goal after twenty minutes, and Tunisia beat Zambia 4-2 to reach the final. He was named in the Team of the Tournament that year, took a runners-up medal from the final against South Africa, won the African Cup Winners' Cup with Étoile du Sahel, was twice Tunisian Footballer of the Year, and scored six goals in eight qualifiers to send Tunisia to the 2002 World Cup. Career record: 81 caps and 16 goals for Tunisia; club career at Étoile Sportive du Sahel, SC Freiburg, CS M'saken.
