A centre-back who kept arriving in the wrong box, he scored both goals against Jordan in the WAFF Championship final in Doha in January 2014, at 52 and 81 minutes, and ended the tournament as top scorer with six. He won the Asian Cup twice, in 2019 and 2023, added the 2014 Arabian Gulf Cup, made the 2019 Team of the Tournament, and stands past 130 caps and 21 goals for Qatar with league titles at Al Sadd. At the 1992 Gulf Cup he finished as top scorer and was voted player of the tournament, and thirteen years later he carried Al-Khor to their first major trophy in 46 years. Mustafa scored 41 goals in 106 internationals between 1992 and 2004, won the 1998 Arab Nations Cup, reached the Barcelona Olympic quarter-finals with Qatar, led the domestic scoring charts three times, and left international football without a single red card.
