A header in Córdoba on 11 June 1978 was his contribution to the 4-1 win over Iran that took Peru into the second round, by which time the country had long since settled on calling him El Patrón. He won the 1975 Copa América with Peru, three Peruvian championships with Alianza Lima in 1975, 1977 and 1978, and made 82 appearances for his country over thirteen years.

The Argentine press named him the Black Diamond after his nights against River Plate, and on 23 August 1981 he scored two minutes into the second half at the Centenario to beat Uruguay 2-1 and push Peru towards Spain. Four Peruvian championships with Sporting Cristal, the Mexican title with Club América in 1987-88, the 1982 World Cup, 39 caps with nine goals, and third place in the 1981 South American player of the year vote behind Maradona and Zico. Career record: 39 caps and 9 goals for Peru; club career at Cagliari Calcio, Tecos, Deportivo Independiente Medellín.
