Barcelona were four up at the Bernabéu on 17 February 1974 when he made it five, the afternoon Cruyff's side won 5-0 in Madrid and Catalonia found a scoreline it still quotes. Peru have won the Copa América twice and he settled the second of them in the 1975 Caracas playoff against Colombia, adding the 1973-74 Spanish championship at Barcelona and a World Cup quarter-final in 1970. A header in Córdoba on 11 June 1978 was his contribution to the 4-1 win over Iran that took Peru into the second round, by which time the country had long since settled on calling him El Patrón. He won the 1975 Copa América with Peru, three Peruvian championships with Alianza Lima in 1975, 1977 and 1978, and made 82 appearances for his country over thirteen years.
