The Eredivisie voted him its player of the season in 2014/15 at PSV, and he retired from the national team with more caps than any Mexican, having captained the side at a fifth World Cup in Qatar. His trophy list runs from the Copa del Rey with Real Betis in 2022 through two Eredivisie titles with PSV, three Gold Cups in 2011, 2015 and 2019, the Golden Ball at the 2015 edition, and the CONCACAF Cup that same year. Against South Korea at France 98 he clamped the ball between both feet and hopped clean through two defenders, and Mexicans have called that move the Cuauhtemiña ever since. He won the 1999 Confederations Cup and still shares that competition's all time scoring record with nine goals, took the Gold Cup in 1996 and 1998, scored at three World Cups as the first Mexican to do so, and finished with 38 goals in 120 caps.
