The Eredivisie voted him its player of the season in 2014/15 at PSV, and he retired from the national team with more caps than any Mexican, having captained the side at a fifth World Cup in Qatar. His trophy list runs from the Copa del Rey with Real Betis in 2022 through two Eredivisie titles with PSV, three Gold Cups in 2011, 2015 and 2019, the Golden Ball at the 2015 edition, and the CONCACAF Cup that same year.
