In November 2007 Gardner opened the scoring against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, his first club goal in almost five years and a rare flourish in 14 seasons and 342 league games at Bolton. He started all three group matches at France 98 as a 19-year-old, won the Caribbean Cup that year, and finished with 111 caps and nine goals for Jamaica.
