In November 2007 Gardner opened the scoring against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, his first club goal in almost five years and a rare flourish in 14 seasons and 342 league games at Bolton. He started all three group matches at France 98 as a 19-year-old, won the Caribbean Cup that year, and finished with 111 caps and nine goals for Jamaica. Career record: 111 caps and 9 goals for Jamaica; club career at Harbour View, Bolton Wanderers, Preston North End.

His goal against Croatia in Lens on 14 June 1998 arrived in the 45th minute and was the first Jamaica ever scored at a World Cup, one of only eight caps he won. Before that came 294 league games and 77 goals for Port Vale, including both in the 1989 Third Division play-off final, then 284 games and 59 goals for Wimbledon, whom he captained from 1995. Career record: 33 caps and 8 goals for Jamaica; club career at Stoke City, Port Vale, Wimbledon; honours include Hall of Fame.
