He was seventeen when Egypt first capped him in 2002, the youngest player the country had sent out, and he was still winning a CAF Champions League in 2020, twelve years after his first. Three Cup of Nations titles, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, four CAF Champions Leagues, ten Egyptian league titles with Al Ahly, 136 caps, and a place in CAF's team of the decade for 2010 to 2020. Zamalek supporters still count him second on the club's all-time scoring list, a forward who led the Egyptian league in goals in 1976-77 and again in 1979-80. Bronze and the best midfielder award at the 1974 Cup of Nations were his high points as a player, with 14 goals in 52 caps, and from the touchline he then won the tournament three times running, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the only coach to do it.
