Zamalek supporters still count him second on the club's all-time scoring list, a forward who led the Egyptian league in goals in 1976-77 and again in 1979-80. Bronze and the best midfielder award at the 1974 Cup of Nations were his high points as a player, with 14 goals in 52 caps, and from the touchline he then won the tournament three times running, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the only coach to do it. Career record: 52 caps and 14 goals for Egypt; club career at Zamalek SC, Kazma Sporting Club.

At the 2008 finals in Ghana he scored against Sudan, pulled his shirt over his head and stood in a white vest reading Sympathize with Gaza. He took the decisive penalty in the 2006 Cup of Nations final and scored the only goal of the 2008 one, won five CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and was BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2008.
