Zamalek supporters still count him second on the club's all-time scoring list, a forward who led the Egyptian league in goals in 1976-77 and again in 1979-80. Bronze and the best midfielder award at the 1974 Cup of Nations were his high points as a player, with 14 goals in 52 caps, and from the touchline he then won the tournament three times running, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, the only coach to do it. Cairo knew him as Bibo, and in more than 450 matches for Al Ahly he collected a single booking, which brought him FIFA's Fair Play prize in 1987. African Footballer of the Year in 1983, he won the Cup of Nations on home soil in 1986, two African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1982 and 1987, three Cup Winners' Cups and ten Egyptian league titles, with 24 goals in 54 caps.
