In the 2010 quarter-final against Cameroon he turned the ball into his own net, then scored twice more, the second of them in extra time, to drag Egypt through 3-1. He won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, was voted best player of the tournament in both 2006 and 2010, and retired on 184 caps, then a world record for a male international.

At the 2008 finals in Ghana he scored against Sudan, pulled his shirt over his head and stood in a white vest reading Sympathize with Gaza. He took the decisive penalty in the 2006 Cup of Nations final and scored the only goal of the 2008 one, won five CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and was BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2008.
