He was seventeen when Egypt first capped him in 2002, the youngest player the country had sent out, and he was still winning a CAF Champions League in 2020, twelve years after his first. Three Cup of Nations titles, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, four CAF Champions Leagues, ten Egyptian league titles with Al Ahly, 136 caps, and a place in CAF's team of the decade for 2010 to 2020. At the 2008 finals in Ghana he scored against Sudan, pulled his shirt over his head and stood in a white vest reading Sympathize with Gaza. He took the decisive penalty in the 2006 Cup of Nations final and scored the only goal of the 2008 one, won five CAF Champions Leagues and seven league titles with Al Ahly, and was BBC African Footballer of the Year in 2008.
