He was seventeen when Egypt first capped him in 2002, the youngest player the country had sent out, and he was still winning a CAF Champions League in 2020, twelve years after his first. Three Cup of Nations titles, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, four CAF Champions Leagues, ten Egyptian league titles with Al Ahly, 136 caps, and a place in CAF's team of the decade for 2010 to 2020. Career record: 127 caps and 3 goals for Egypt; club career at Al Ahly SC, Kazma Sporting Club, Pyramids.

In the 2010 quarter-final against Cameroon he turned the ball into his own net, then scored twice more, the second of them in extra time, to drag Egypt through 3-1. He won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, was voted best player of the tournament in both 2006 and 2010, and retired on 184 caps, then a world record for a male international.
