His free kick from the left in the 1962 quarter-final at Arica lifted over the wall and dropped past Lev Yashin, and the Soviet Union were out of the World Cup. Four goals made him a joint top scorer of that tournament, the only Chilean to top a World Cup scoring list, and he finished third on home soil, won six Chilean titles with the Ballet Azul at Universidad de Chile and held the caps record for decades. Sierra's long ball came down on his thigh at Wembley in February 1998, and the volley that followed beat Nigel Martyn before he added a penalty in a 2-0 win over England. In France that summer he scored four times, and the honours run to Serie A and the Coppa Italia with Lazio in 2000, two Scudetti at Juventus, four Argentine titles at River Plate and 37 goals for Chile, a record until Alexis Sánchez broke it.
