Deportivo La Coruña's supporters voted him their player of the season in 2007/08, the year the club climbed from relegation trouble into the UEFA Cup, after a 2005 arrival that made him the first Canadian in La Liga. He was named most valuable player of the 2007 Gold Cup, Canadian player of the year in 2008, and became Toronto's first Designated Player in 2009, retiring on 89 caps, a national record he held from 2015 to 2021.
