The Brazilian coach Orlando Fantoni pushed him off the left wing and into midfield, and as Mendocita he stayed in Venezuela's plans long enough to appear at three Copa Américas, 1967, 1975 and 1979. Voted the country's best player in 1966, he won league titles with Deportivo Italia in 1963 and 1966, Deportivo Galicia in 1970 and Portuguesa in 1973, plus the Copa Venezuela in 1971, before entering Venezuela's sports hall of fame.
