Asked in Port of Spain why he qualified for Trinidad and Tobago, Birchall answered "me mum", and on 12 November 2005 he hit the equaliser from outside the box, four minutes after Bahrain had gone ahead in the play-off first leg. That goal led to a first World Cup, and he added MLS Cup 2011 and two Supporters' Shields with LA Galaxy, promotion with Port Vale in 2013, and 44 caps. Career record: club career at Port Vale, Coventry City, LA Galaxy.
