At the Stade de France on 11 May 2002 he held the centre of Lorient's defence through the Coupe de France final, won 1-0 against Bastia. Fifty-six caps for Senegal between 1998 and 2006 took him to the 2002 World Cup quarter-final and the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations final, and he was named in the Team of the Tournament at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations.
