Senegal's first match at a World Cup was the 1-0 win over holders France in Seoul on 31 May 2002, and Diatta held the centre of defence against Henry and Trézéguet for ninety minutes. He played in every match of the run to the quarter-finals, captained the country across 71 caps, lost the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations final on penalties, and won two Ligue 1 titles with Lyon in 2005 and 2006.
