Werder Bremen sent him on in the 87th minute of the DFB-Pokal final on 29 May 2004, a twenty-year-old Paraguayan closing out a 3-2 win that completed Bremen's league and cup double. Valdez won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal in 2003-04, the MLS Cup with Seattle Sounders in 2016, reached the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, where he scored Paraguay's fourth penalty in the shootout against Japan, and finished runner-up at the 2011 Copa América with 13 goals in 77 caps.
