Twenty-four minutes into his Real Sociedad debut at Cádiz, Kubo ran onto a Mikel Merino pass and scored the only goal of the match, aged 21 years and 71 days on 14 August 2022. He started Japan's wins over Germany and Spain at the 2022 World Cup, won the Copa del Rey in April 2026, and was named the club's player of the season in 2022-23 and La Liga's player of the month in September 2023.
