On 26 April 2011 he took the field at Old Trafford, the first Japanese player to appear in a Champions League semi-final, three weeks after starting the 5-2 win at San Siro. Schalke lifted the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup that season, Japan won the 2011 Asian Cup with him at right-back, and Kashima Antlers had already given him three consecutive J1 League titles from 2007 to 2009.
