On 28 October 1993 in Doha he played the match where Japan stood two minutes from a first World Cup and Iraq's injury-time header took it away. A Brazilian who became a Japanese citizen in 1989, he won the 1992 Asian Cup, five Japan Soccer League titles and the first two J.League championships in 1993 and 1994, was Japanese Footballer of the Year in 1990 and 1991, and made 32 appearances for the country he chose.
