They called him Mister Marinos at Yokohama, where he played 267 league games, and his 122 caps were Japan's record for thirteen years until Yasuhito Endo passed the mark in October 2012. He captained the side that won the 1992 Asian Cup at home, Japan's first continental title, led them out at their first World Cup in 1998, was voted Asian Footballer of the Year in 1995, and won the J.League with Yokohama that same season.
