Paintsil pulled an Israeli flag from his sock after Ghana beat the Czech Republic in Cologne on 17 June 2006, a thank you, he later explained, to the Tel Aviv clubs who had seen him off at the airport. He won the Israeli league in 2003 and the State Cup in 2006, third place at the 2008 Nations Cup, a World Cup quarter-final with Ghana in 2010, and a place in the 2009 CAF Team of the Year.
