Colombia's number 2 scored once for his country, a header from Alexis García's corner that drew 1-1 with England at Wembley on 24 May 1988, and Medellín knew him as el caballero del fútbol. He played every match of Atlético Nacional's 1989 Copa Libertadores win, the first by a Colombian club, took the 1991 league title, and made 51 appearances for Colombia, playing at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups, before he was killed in Medellín at 27.
