The armband was on his sleeve when DR Congo met hosts Egypt at the 2019 Cup of Nations, a tournament he started in every round before Madagascar knocked the Leopards out in the last sixteen. Thirty-six caps took in the 2017 quarter-final run in Gabon, and the club years ran from Monaco through Ingolstadt and Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga to three seasons at Fenerbahçe, two in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ettifaq, and a late move to Sydney FC.
