El Kaiser, as Chilean football knew him, wore the armband on 5 June 1991 when the Copa Libertadores was placed in his hands at the Monumental in Santiago, Colo-Colo having beaten Olimpia for the first continental title won by any Chilean club. That trophy sits with six Chilean championships and five Copa Chile wins for Colo-Colo, 53 caps for Chile, and a third place at the 1991 Copa América on home ground.
