Cruz Azul had never signed a foreign player until 1971, when they took a centre half out of Universidad de Chile; Quintano stayed six years and left as a club immortal. He partnered Elías Figueroa at the 1974 World Cup and reached the 1979 Copa América final, took three Chilean championships in the Ballet Azul years, three Mexican titles and the CONCACAF Champions Cup, and won the Cóndor de Bronce as Chile's best footballer in 1967.
