Germany needed extra time to get past him and Algeria in Porto Alegre on 30 June 2014, after ninety minutes in which his midfield screen gave the eventual world champions nothing. Born in Versailles, he chose Algeria and won 43 caps, played two World Cups and two Africa Cups of Nations, and in Spain he made 273 La Liga appearances across ten seasons, taking Getafe back up through the 2017 promotion play-off.
