At the 1992 Gulf Cup he finished as top scorer and was voted player of the tournament, and thirteen years later he carried Al-Khor to their first major trophy in 46 years. Mustafa scored 41 goals in 106 internationals between 1992 and 2004, won the 1998 Arab Nations Cup, reached the Barcelona Olympic quarter-finals with Qatar, led the domestic scoring charts three times, and left international football without a single red card. Born in Algueirão-Mem Martins and still called Ró-Ró, he came from the Portuguese lower divisions to Qatar in 2011, and on 30 January 2024 he scored the shootout penalty that sent Uzbekistan out of the Asian Cup quarter-final. His honours run to two Asian Cups with Qatar, in 2019 and 2023, six Qatar Stars League titles at Al Sadd between 2019 and 2026, three Qatar Cups, and more than 100 caps. Career record: 80 caps and 1 goals for Qatar; club career at S.C. Farense, Al Ahli SC, Al Sadd Sports Club.
