The Argentine press named him the Black Diamond after his nights against River Plate, and on 23 August 1981 he scored two minutes into the second half at the Centenario to beat Uruguay 2-1 and push Peru towards Spain. Four Peruvian championships with Sporting Cristal, the Mexican title with Club América in 1987-88, the 1982 World Cup, 39 caps with nine goals, and third place in the 1981 South American player of the year vote behind Maradona and Zico. Career record: 39 caps and 9 goals for Peru; club career at Cagliari Calcio, Tecos, Deportivo Independiente Medellín.

Yokohama, 16 December 2012: his header in the 69th minute was the only goal of the Club World Cup final, and Chelsea went home beaten by Corinthians. Peru's record scorer with 40 goals in 128 caps, the 2012 Club World Cup with Corinthians, a Copa América final in 2019, top scorer at three of them in 2011, 2015 and 2019, the 2023 Copa Sudamericana with LDU Quito and two Bundesliga titles at Bayern. Career record: 128 caps and 40 goals for Peru; club career at Hamburger SV, S.C. Corinthians Paulista, Clube de Regatas do Flamengo.
