In Addis Ababa in March 1976 he wore the armband as Morocco took the Africa Cup of Nations, finishing the tournament as its best player and second-highest scorer, and lifting a trophy his country would not win again until 2026. African Footballer of the Year in 1975, he spent his entire career at Chabab Mohammédia, winning the Moroccan league in 1980 and two Throne Cups, and he is still Morocco's record scorer with 36 goals. Six minutes into the second leg at the Bernabéu on 5 March 2019, Ziyech swept Ajax ahead of the holders, and by full time Real Madrid had lost 4-1 at home and their three-year hold on Europe was over. He won the Champions League and Club World Cup with Chelsea in 2021, the Eredivisie and Dutch Cup double with Ajax in 2019, back-to-back Süper Lig titles with Galatasaray, and led the Eredivisie for assists four times.
