In the 2010 quarter-final against Cameroon he turned the ball into his own net, then scored twice more, the second of them in extra time, to drag Egypt through 3-1. He won the Africa Cup of Nations four times, in 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010, was voted best player of the tournament in both 2006 and 2010, and retired on 184 caps, then a world record for a male international.
