He was seventeen when Egypt first capped him in 2002, the youngest player the country had sent out, and he was still winning a CAF Champions League in 2020, twelve years after his first. Three Cup of Nations titles, in 2006, 2008 and 2010, four CAF Champions Leagues, ten Egyptian league titles with Al Ahly, 136 caps, and a place in CAF's team of the decade for 2010 to 2020. Al Ahly fans named the front three of Barakat, Aboutrika and Emad Moteab the Bermuda Triangle, and in 2005 he finished the CAF Champions League as its joint top scorer with seven goals.
